3.  GPS SATELLITE LOCK

Will Endura work under heavy tree cover? Under clouds?
YES, Endura uses a high-sensitivity GPS sensor so that foliage and clouds in most cases will not cause a significant problem to signal reception.

Why can’t I find my current position?
There are 3 possible reasons what you are not able to find your current position on your Endura.
• You currently do not have a GPS fix to allow Endura to calculate your current position.
• You are currently in pan mode on the “Map Page”, you will see the cursor.  You need to select the “Back” button in the lower right-hand corner to get back to your current position.
• You are in the “? mode” which indicates that Endura has lost it satellite fix.

How do I see whether I have a satellite fix and how long is it going to take?
• You can see what kind of satellite fix Endura has on the Satellite status page.  Once the device has acquired the location, you will see the signal bars of the satellites used in determining the position turning green.  On the map, the location arrow will be white with black border whenever Endura has a satellite fix and solid black with a question mark in the middle when there is no fix. Please consult the user manual for details.
• In most cases Endura should have a fix – as long as satellites are in view – in a matter of a few minutes. The exact time is dependent on the number of satellites available and how close you are to any obstructions like tall buildings or canyon walls.

My Endura will not acquire a satellite fix?
There are several reason why your Endura might have difficulty in acquiring a satellite fix.  Endura will typically acquire a satellite fix in 1-2 minutes.
• You are indoors and the Endura can not get a good satellite fix.
• Your current location has terrain that is blocking the satellite signals preventing you from getting a satellite fix.
• The Endura has been moved more than 500 miles while it is off, it could now take 5-7 minutes for Endura to acquire a satellite fix.

Why won’t my Endura lock onto EGNOS signals?
First you will need to verify that WAAS/EGNOS is enabled.  From the “Main Menu” select “Settings” > “GPS”, if WAAS/EGNOS is not “Enabled” then tap the “WAAS/EGNOS” field to change from “Disabled” to “Enabled”.  EGNOS satellites can be more effected by terrain and is designed to be used in Europe.

Why won’t my Endura lock onto WAAS signals?
First you will need to verify that WAAS/EGNOS is enabled.  From the “Main Menu” select “Settings” > “GPS”, if WAAS/EGNOS is not “Enabled” then tap the “WAAS/EGNOS” field to change from “Disabled” to “Enabled”.  Currently WAAS satellite coverage is only available in North America and can be more effected by terrain.

What is WAAS?
Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) is basically a system of 2 geostationary satellites and ground stations that provide GPS signal corrections to give you better position accuracy, typically up to 5 times better.  A WAAS enabled receiver can give you a position accuracy of better than 3 meters 95% of the time.  Currently WAAS satellite coverage is only available in North America.

What is EGNOS?
Euro Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) is basically a system of 3 geostationary satellites and a network of ground stations that provide GPS signal corrections, to allow users in Europe and beyond to determine their position to within 2 meters.

Is there a way to use the Endura with the GPS receiver turned off?
Yes, from the “Main Menu” select “Settings” > “GPS” then tap the “GPS” field to toggle between “Enabled” and “Disabled”.  Select “Disabled” to turn off the GPS receiver.

4.  SENSORS – 3-Axis Compass & Barometric Altimeter

Which is more accurate the Barometric or GPS altimeter?
A barometric pressure based altimeter will be more accurate provided it has been calibrated correctly and accurately.  If you are looking for an altimeter that does not require calibration then you should be using the GPS-based altimeter.

Since a barometric pressure based altimeter determines your current altitude based on the difference between the barometric pressure when you calibrated your GPS and the current barometric pressure, it can be affected by changes in weather conditions.  If the weather conditions improve (high pressure system) then it will give you a lower elevation reading. If the weather conditions worsen (low pressure system) then you will get a higher elevation reading.

In order to get the best results from a barometric pressure based altimeter you should calibrate it each time you are ready to use it and then check your altimeter reading when you are at a location of known elevation.

How do I calibrate the sensors in my Sierra or Safari?
As with any sensors, the compass and barometric altimeter may need to be calibrated from time to time.
• The compass will calibrate itself as you move around with Endura. If you want to calibrate it manually, then go to “Settings” – “Compass”. Rotate the device slowly in all directions by twisting your hand until you get confirmation that the calibration is complete. Note that the compass will be turned off in “On-Road” mode (Turn-by-Turn navigation) and thus you will also not be able to calibrate it,
• To calibrate the altimeter, go to “Settings” – “Elevation”. You will have the option to either enter a value manually (if you know the elevation at your current location) or use the GPS elevation as a calibration value (as long as you have a “3D” fix from the satellites).

How do I restore all device settings to original values (Master Reset)?
Master Reset can be accessed from the main menu by selecting “Settings” > “Restore Defaults” then confirm that you wish to restore factory defaults.  All user generated data will not be lost during a Master Reset.

Will the calibrated altitude still be accurate at a new location?
When you calibrate the barometric pressure altimeter you are setting the known (calibrated) elevation to the current barometric pressure.  Endura uses this value to create an elevation vs. pressure curve.

The altitude accuracy at a new location is time and weather dependent.  How long has it been since you last calibrated your altimeter, you should calibrate your altimeter every time you begin using it or at least once a day if you are on a long trip.  Barometric pressure based altimeters are effected by weather since the barometric pressure will change either due to changes in elevation or changes in weather (Higher pressure = good weather or lower elevations & Lower pressure + bad weather or higher elevations)

Based on this information your calibrated altitude will still be accurate at a new location if:

• The weather has not changed.  If the weather conditions improve (high pressure system) then it will give you a lower elevation reading. If the weather conditions worsen (low pressure system) then you will get a higher elevation reading.
• It has not been more than a couple of hours since you calibrated your Endura.  You should consider calibrating your Endura every day you use it.

Can I change the x-axis of the elevation plot to be either time or distance?
Yes, from the “Elevation Plot” page tap the screen, tap the “Options” button then tap the “Horizontal Scale” field to select between “Distance” or “Time”.

How do I change the elevation settings used on the “Elevation Plot” page?
From the “Elevation Plot” page tap the screen, tap the “Options” button then tap the “Elevation Settings” field, from here you can select the elevation source by tapping the “Elevation Source” field to select between “Pressure Sensor” or “GPS“.  If “Pressure Sensor” is selected you can then calibrate the elevation by tapping the “Calibrate Elevation” field.

How do I calibrate the touch screen?
The Endura touch screen is calibrated at the factory and does not require recalibration.

5.  MAP VIEW & NAVIGATION

How does the “Display Mode” of “Base Map” differ from “Imagery” and “Hybrid”?
The “Base Map” setting will depict any “vector” content (think points and lines), such a POIs, roads, rivers and trails. The “imagery” setting displays raster images (a picture similar to a bitmap or jpeg file), which include satellite imagery or topo maps from mapselect.com, or the hillshade image that appears when viewing larger areas. The “hybrid” setting displays both, with the basemap overlaid on the imagery.

Endura’s Basemap/Imagery/Hybrid toggle provides flexibility, allowing you to show all available mapping details, or to quickly declutter the map and focus attention on just the map details you need.

How does “North up” differ from “Track up” and “Course up”?
With North Up, the map is oriented with north at the top of the page and the map never changes orientation, but the position arrow will shift and move as you navigate.  With Track Up, the map will rotate as you move to always keep the direction you are moving displayed at the top of the map.  For Course up, the map will rotate based on where you need to go rather than the direction you are currently heading.

How do I change the detail settings for the map page?
Click anywhere on the map to make the cross-hairs appear. On the bottom left of the screen press the button “Options” to gain access to the following: “Display Mode”, “Orientation”, “Detail Settings” and “Page Settings”.  Select “Detail Setting” from here you can change the “Detail Level” from “Low” to “Medium” to “High” as well as toggle on/off the following features – “Roads”, “Contour Lines”, “Trails”, “Waypoints”, “Point of Interest” and “Cursor Information”.

My Endura is displaying incorrect distance or speed readings?
The distance and speed units of measure (UOM) can be changed to either “Statute”, “Nautical” or “Metric” units.  From the “Main Menu” select “Settings” > “Units of Measure” then tap the “”Speed & Distance” field to scroll thru the 3 options.

Can I modify the detail displayed on the map screen to optimize the speed of map drawing and zooming?
• Endura is a state-of-the-art consumer electronics handheld computer. The nature of mapping content is that it can be very large in size when large areas are displayed or a lot of detail is shown. For Endura we have provided some of the best and most detailed content available for handheld GPS units to date and you have several options of how to display it on the unit.
• The factory settings are optimized for the content that is pre-loaded on the device, but should be adjusted as additional content is loaded onto the device as necessary. Here are a couple of tips to optimize the speed of Endura when a lot of detailed mapping content is present, e.g. through one of Lowrance’s advanced outdoor content microSD cards.
• Click anywhere on the map to make the cross-hairs appear. On the bottom left of the screen press the button “Options” to gain access to the following: “Display Mode”, “Orientation”, “Detail Settings” and “Page Settings”
• The display mode “Hybrid” displays all of the available map data simultaneously on the device, which may affect the map redraw speed. If desired you can increase map speed by choosing either “Imagery” or “Base Map”
• In “Detail settings” you can modify or turn on/off several categories of content
• “Detail level” can be toggled through low, medium and high. This will manage the zoom levels at which certain content like trails, POIs, etc. will be shown on the map; note that it will not turn off certain types of content, so you will not lose information. When a detailed outdoor microSD card is inserted, the level “low” is ideal as this very detailed content will otherwise clutter the screen. This setting will also increase the drawing and zooming speed at the lower zoom levels
• The other buttons in the “Detail settings” menu can be used to turn on or off categories of data. This will help to focus the map view on the categories that are most relevant for your activity.
• Note that very long trails on the device (several thousand points) may have a certain impact on the drawing speed of maps – especially when it is the current trail that continues to log while it is displayed. You can optimize this by only showing the trails that are relevant for your current use (toggle “Trails” in the “Detail settings” menu of the map screen to the desired setting). Another way of improving this is to save the trail when it reaches a certain size and then reset the current trail in “Find” – “Trails” – “Current trail” – “More Options”.
• And of course it may make sense to simply turn off trail logging when it is not needed in “Settings” – “Trail logging”

Can I change the page sequence and pages displayed?
Yes, from the “Main Menu” select “Settings” > “Pages”.
• To add a new page, select “New Page” then choose the new page from the available pages listed.

Why would I have trouble displaying my downloaded maps from Mapselect.com on my Endura GPS?
There are 3 reasons that the maps you have downloaded from Mapselect.com may not display on your Endura.

• The maps you are trying to use were downloaded for another Lowrance GPS unit and have been encrypted for use only on that unit.  You will need to purchase new maps for use on your Endura unit.
• Multiple map types have been downloaded for the exact same area of coverage and only one type can be displayed at a time.  You will need to remove the other types from the unit or place them on separate microSD cards in order to get your maps to display correctly.
• The wrong “display mode” is selected under the “Map Options” settings, ie “Base Map”, “Imagery” and “Hybrid”.

I have inserted an “Advanced Outdoor Content microSD card” into my Endura unit and I do not see any change in mapping detail, why?
You will need to verify that you have the correct settings under “Map Display” options.  Touch anywhere on the map page to get the cross-hairs to appear, then click on the “options” button in the lower left-hand corner of the screen, this will bring up the “Map Options” page.  Tap the “Display Mode” field to toggle between “Base Map”, “Imagery” and “Hybrid”, you will need to select either “Imagery” or “Hybrid” to be able to view most of the increased mapping detail.

Can I copy Map Data to the internal memory?
Only GPX files can be copied from a microSD card to Endura’s internal memory. Any pre-programmed mapping cards purchased as an accessory contain data that must remain on the card and cannot be copied to Endura’s internal memory.

11.  MULTIMEDIA USE – Pictures, Videos & MP3s

What type of Audio, Video and Photos files will Endura handle?
Endura can handle the following file types:  Photo – JPEG and BMP, Video – MPEG, AVI and WMV and for Music – WMA & MP3

How do I get an Endura GPS to play photos or videos from a trail camera?
First, for an Endura GPS to play photos or videos from a trail camera, the trail camera must be one that is designed to use SD cards.  To make this work, you first must have a microSD card with an SD adapter that will work with your trail camera.  Many trail cameras can only use SD cards up to 2GB or 4GB in size.  You need to be sure you use a microSD of the same size or you may run into compatibility issues with the card.

It is best to use a newly formatted microSD card with an SD adapter in your trail camera.  First, set up the trail camera with the microSD and SD adapter on your tree of choice.  It is always good to mark the location of the camera on the Endura GPS using the trail camera icon for the waypoint so you can navigate easily to the location later.  After the camera has run for several days, weeks, etc., then navigate your way back to the camera with the GPS.  While you are standing by the trail camera, you can remove the microSD from the camera and insert into the Endura GPS.  The Endura will scan the microSD and identify all available photos or videos.  You can then go to the Main Menu, click on Tools and select either the Photo Viewer or Video Player.  You can then access all available images or videos and can even flip the photo or video sideways to maximize the viewability on the screen.  With pictures, you can zoom in and pan from side to side to see photo details i.e. antler points, etc.

12.  COMPUTER CONNECTION & MICROSD FILE MANAGEMENT

How do I connect Endura to a computer?
Simply open the door on the bottom of the unit by pulling and bending back the rubber flap.  Then insert the mini USB connector into the Endura and the other end into your computer.  Your PC will then show the Endura as a mass storage device which can be viewed using Windows Explorer.

What kind of cable do I need to connect Endura to my computer?
A mini USB to USB cable (also known as a standard USB “A” to 5 pin mini “B” USB device cable) is required to connect Endura to your PC.

Is Endura Mac-compatible?
Yes, Endura will be recognized as a mass storage device on either a PC or MAC.

Why can’t I operate Endura when it’s connected to my computer?
When you connect Endura to your PC, using a standard mini USB cable, it operates as a mass storage device and you are not able to operate it as a GPS unit.  In order to get NMEA 0183 output you will need a special USB cable configuration.

What types of data can be stored on the microSD cards?
Photo files in a JPEG or BMP format, Video files in MPEG, AVI and WMV format, Music files in WMA & MP3 format.  Geocache files in .GPX or .LOC format must be stored in the internal user available memory on Endura.  In order to load Geocache Pocket Query files to the internal memory, the microSD cards must be removed from Endura, so that the unit will be recognized as a mass storage device.

Which manufacturer’s microSD cards should I use on Endura?
Our tests have indicated almost all microSD card should work in Endura, however we recommend that you use a premium brand card.

How do I insert a microSD card into Endura?
• Simply open the door on the bottom of the unit by pulling and bending back the rubber flap. Then push in the card with the narrower side facing forward and the label/text facing you into the card slot on the bottom right hand side.
• If the unit is on while the card is inserted, Endura will read the maps immediately (which may take several seconds); please confirm the messages on screen in the process. If off, Endura will read the maps from the card at the next power-on.
• MicroSD cards can be purchased with pre-loaded mapping content to enhance your navigation experience. Or you can use them to load multimedia files onto Endura to enjoy pictures, videos, or music on your Endura through the multimedia applications found in the “Tools” menu.
• To remove a microSD card from your Endura, you simply press on the card, it will be ejected and then you can remove the card.

I have inserted a microSD card with data in Endura, but the maps don’t show as expected?
• Please check whether the map settings are switched to the desired values. Click anywhere on the map to make the cross-hair appear. On the bottom left of the screen press the button “Options”.
• Depending on the type of content you are trying to show on the map try toggling through the options of “Display mode” on the top. Hybrid will show imagery as well as the base map (vector content) and thus will allow you to see all content available. If you would like to simplify the information on the screen you can switch to either Imagery or the Base Map.
• Another way of changing the information on screen is the detail settings menu on the “Options” screen. There you can turn on and off different types of data like roads, contour lines, and several others.

Why can’t I load data onto Endura’s internal memory when I have been able to in the past?
If you have installed a microSD into Endura you will only be able to upload data to the microSD card.  To upload data to Endura’s internal memory you will need to remove the microSD card from the card slot.

Why does my computer not recognize my Endura as a mass storage device when I plug it in using a mini USB cable?
There are two main reasons why your Endura is not recognized as a mass storage device.

• You currently have a microSD card inserted in your Endura and it needs to be removed, so that you will be able to access the internal memory. (In this case, it may be recognized as a mass storage device, but simply not displaying the files you expected.)
• The USB cable you are using is either a proprietary design to another device or is an inexpensive design that is not compatible with Endura.

How many GPX files can I load in to my Endura?
There is no limit to the number of GPX files that can be loaded into your Endura. As a practical matter, all new GPX files loaded onto Endura must be processed the first time the unit is turned on. Therefore, loading a large number of GPX files onto the device at one time can result in a very long start-up cycle. Also, placing a large number of GPX trail files onto the device can affect map redraw rate.

How do I copy (Import) GPX files from a microSD card to Endura’s internal memory?
Insert the microSD card with GPX files into your Endura.  After your Endura has loaded any Map Data, tap the “Done” button.  Select “Yes” on the “Import GPX from Card” dialog window.  Your Endura will now copy over all of the GPX files loaded onto the microSD card to the internal memory.

How do I copy (Export) GPX files from Endura’s internal memory to a microSD card?
Insert a blank microSD card into your Endura.  From the “Main Menu” select “Settings” > “Export GPX to Card”.  Tap “Yes” on the “Export GPX to Card?’ dialog window. All of the data from the internal memory will now be copied to the microSD card.

13.  POWER MANAGEMENT

How can I maximize my battery life in the Endura? (backlight settings)
The biggest drain on battery life is the usage of backlighting.  Using the “Standby Mode” is another way to maximize battery life in the Endura.  There are 3 ways you can affect backlighting to increase your battery life:
• Backlight Timeout or how long the backlight is on, this can be adjusted under the “Power Savings” option under the “Settings” menu.  The lowest setting of 15 seconds should be more than sufficient when you are using Endura for a typical outdoor activity.
• Intensity of the backlight, this can be adjusted by pressing the power button which will bring up a slider bar that will allow you to set a custom intensity.  After the custom intensity is set each time you press the power button it will cycle thru the 3 settings – 0%, custom & 100%.
• The accidental pushing of buttons or the touch screen which will activate the backlight, this can be prevented by applying the Keylock.  To do this simply press the + and – keys at the same time, repeat to unlock.  When you are not actively using your Endura and it is being stored in a pocket or hung from your pack you should use the keylock.

Does the “battery type” selection change the accuracy of the battery life indicator?
Yes, the “battery type” selection does calibrate the battery life indicator and low battery indicator to that type of battery.  For best results you should be sure to change the “Battery Type” selection to the correct battery type.

What does the red flashing light mean?
The flashing red light is an indicator that your battery life is getting low and the batteries should be changed soon.  The red light will flash a couple of times during the unit start up and is not an indication of battery life.  When the unit is in “Standby” mode the indicator light will flash green to let you know that the unit is still on.

What is “Standby” Mode?
“Standby” mode is another way that you can maximize battery life in the Endura.  “Standby” mode can be accessed by pressing the power button until the “Standby” or “Cancel” option appears, tap “Standby” to enter “Standby” mode.  In “Standby” the unit is asleep and will not record any data, the unit can exit out of “Standby” by pressing the power button.  Using “Standby” eliminates the long boot time when the unit is cold started.  The indicator light will flash green to indicate that the unit is in “Standby” mode.

Will I lose data when I change out the batteries?
No, all data is saved.

Why is there no option for NiCd batteries under battery type?
NiCd is considered to be an inferior rechargeable battery and should not be used in Endura.  Per Kevin Otterman (PLD for Endura), you should buck-up and purchase some damn NiMH batteries.

14.  UPDATING SOFTWARE & MAPS

How do I find out the firmware (software) version that I am running?
The firmware version can be found on the “About” screen.  To access the “About” screen press and hold the “Menu” button for 5-8 seconds.  The version number will be shown on the second line.

How do I know if I need to run the 1.1.0 update for my Endura?
You will need to access the “About” page by pressing and holding the “Menu” button for about 5 seconds.  On the second line you will see the version number followed by “NA Sierra”, NA Safari”, “NA Out&Back”, etc. depending on your Endura model.  If the “NA Sierra”, NA Safari” or NA Out&Back” is followed by 1.1 (or above) then you do not need to run the 1.1.0 update.

How do I know if I need to run the 1.2.0 update for my Endura?
You will need to access the “About” page by pressing and holding the “Menu” button for about 5 seconds.  On the second line you will see the version number followed by “NA Sierra”, NA Safari”, “NA Out&Back”, etc. depending on your Endura model.  If the “NA Sierra”, NA Safari” or NA Out&Back” is followed by 1.2 (or above) then you do not need to run the 1.2.0 update.
